For someone who thought he was never good at singing, David Ochoa’s musical career is right in tune.
Traveling from his hometown of L.A. a few years ago, Ochoa stumbled across Fort Collins and was enticed to stay because of the music scene. Inspired by the organic vibe of local music, he taught himself how to play the guitar and started a band.
The Ten Timers have opened up for several well-known acts such as English Beat, Toots and the Maytals, and one of Ochoa’s favorites, The Aggrolites.
“It was so cool, we got to sing with them backstage,” Ochoa reminisced.
These days, Ochoa, frontman of his new band Soul Criminals, belts out reggae and funk songs to crowds all over town. His voice is captivating and full of emotion – sort of a love child of Motown and Sublime, hardly the shy introvert he perceives himself to be.
“I’ve been through a lot, you know, drugs and all that. But once I got off them, my mind cleared, and I realized what I wanted,” Ochoa said. “These days I sing about that.”
With a new album in the works and plans to launch a solo career in the future, Ochoa has come a long way. His journey has just begun, though.
“I feel like this is my home, but if life takes me other places, I’m not afraid of that.”
Ochoa will be performing solo at Lucky Joe’s on June 9th and Soul Criminal will be headlining at Audio Flood 2, a hip-hop show at the Mishawaka Amphitheater on June 12th.
