From the Thunderground Sound Studios of Laramie to the stage room at Avo’s: J. Shogren, trapper, professor, backcountry skier, part-time resident of Sweden, and consummate storyteller. There’s the hard acoustic rootsy blues, for a start, but then all kinds of other musical things happen. It’s like when a wine connoisseur sips a vintage and finds mystical traces of lilac or oregano or some other unexpected flavor. “A good idea sticks, a great idea kicks,” says the songwriter, who describes his own creations as “Pulp Americana,” “scruffy and gruff,” and sometimes “music for your inner grifter.” Prepare to be subverted.
