Dub doesn’t have to be dreary – look no further than Mr. Anonymous 2. The sophomore release from Jeep Macnichol’s Mr. Anonymous project features 10 original tracks, one remix, about a dozen vocalists and a consistently positive vibe. It’s not a soundtrack for setting fire ‘pon Babylon, but just might help aspiring Rastafarians nestle up next to some ‘rude gyals.’
The beats alone are worth it. The placid acoustic guitar and methodical, pulsating rhythm of the opening track “Cool Vibe” sounds like a tasteful homage to Massive Attack’s “Teardrop.”
Elsewhere, “Chi Widdley Bup” provides an infectious, percussion-heavy floor and is a definite standout. Then again, its remix might be even better, equipped with a beefy, infectious bass line that might blow a speaker or two.
Macnichol has a clear talent for producing music that is intricate yet inviting, sophisticated but not snobby. His lush soundscapes are often a lot more interesting than the forgettable efforts of his guest singers.
Yet, there is a sameness to the album’s sound that can blur the line between sounding laid back and just simply lethargic. After “Cool Vibe,” the first half of the album hazily drifts along, and while it never gets bad per se, it does tend to get old in certain spots.
That said, Mr. Anonymous 2 delivers enough quality to earn its keep. If you’re fleshing out the playlist for your next jerk chicken cookout or just looking for a break between Thievery Corporation albums, it wouldn’t hurt to add this album to the mix.
